About GEAR UP
Gaining Early Awareness and Readiness for Undergraduate Programs (GEAR UP) is a federal grant program that provides funds "to increase the number of low-income students who are prepared to enter and succeed in postsecondary education." The federal website is here . As a part of this effort, GEAR UP employees work to educate and train students, parents, and teachers about post-secondary (after high school) opportunities. Long Beach Unified also participates in the California GEAR UP program, which has the same stated purpose as the federal program but funds additional work through the State budget. The GEAR UP program follows one grade of Long Beach students through their academic career. In the 2010-11 school year the GEAR UP class is composed of 9th graders. There are currently 6 Federal GEAR UP high schools.
